I am going back through watching the X Files now and I find it interesting watching it again that Scully’s skepticism of what she sees as Mulder’s outlandish ideas are nearly always proven to be wrong and misguided, and that Mulder was actually right the whole time, no matter how crazy his ideas were. I think the show would have been much more interesting and could have cultivated a more effective cultural conversation if Scully’s skepticism was sometimes proven right and Mulder’s crazy ideas were shown to be just that, crazy. Yes, I understand that Scully acted as the foil (naysayer) to every conspiracy theory that Mulder puts forward, but I just can’t help but feel that Scully’s character would have been more effective if her role didn’t always amount to trying to shoot down Mulder’s ideas (with him always being ultimately right and her always being ultimately wrong). It would have shown that, yes, some conspiracies out there do end up being true, but not ALL of them. I would enjoy seeing episodes where things that initially were suspected by Mulder to be alien/supernatural/etc, ended up having a completely reasonable and rational explanation that Scully was advocating for the entire episode, just to illustrate that Mulder is not ALWAYS right.
