There’s a category of television I finished thinking was good but not exceptional, well made, interesting enough, worth the time, and then found myself still turning over weeks or months later in a way that the shows I was most enthusiastic about at the finale don’t seem to produce. The ones I was ready to recommend to everyone immediately have sometimes faded the fastest, while something quieter that I couldn’t quite evaluate while I was inside it has stayed in a way I didn’t anticipate.
I’ve started to think the shows that last are the ones that plant something rather than deliver something, that leave an image or an idea or an unresolved feeling that continues working on you after the credits roll rather than resolving cleanly into a verdict you can state. And that quality is almost impossible to recognise while you’re watching because the planting hasn’t produced anything yet.
