This week’s Tank Job of the Week has been dedicated to Brian Ferentz.

The Tank Job of the Week is an award for the FBS team that did the best job of humiliating itself over the weekend. Whether they blew a large lead, choked away a spot in the limelight, lost a game they had absolutely no right losing, or completely screwed everything on a last second blunder, the TJOTW winner sets the gold standard in college football misery.

PREVIOUS WINNERS (By week)

  1. Baylor Bears (lost to Texas State 42-31).
  2. Nevada Wolf Pack (lost to Idaho 33-6)
  3. Oklahoma State Cowboys (lost to South Alabama 33-7)
  4. Minnesota Golden Gophers (lost to Northwestern 37-34)
  5. UCF Knights (lost to Baylor 36-35)
  6. Miami-FL Hurricanes (lost to Georgia Tech 23-20
  7. Boise State Broncos (lost to Colorado State 31-30)
  8. North Carolina Tar Heels (lost to Virginia 31-27)
  9. North Carolina Tar Heels (lost to Georgia Tech 46-42)/ Sam Houston Bearkats (lost to UTEP 37-34)

LAST WEEK: Alright, I’m calling an audible here. Technically North Carolina got four more votes, but it’s by far the closest voting we’ve ever had for a weekly award, so I’m just going to go ahead and announce that for the first time ever on Reddit, we have CO-WINNERS for Tank Job of the Week! That’s also back-to-back for the Tar Heels. Luckily both played FCS teams and got wins this week, so we won’t be seeing a repeat or three peat. Although SHSU really, really, REALLY tried against Kennesaw State.

Onto this week, and like the headline says, this week’s post has been dedicated to Brian Ferentz. While technically voting for an individual does not count for the TJOTW, they are noted, and Brian does hold the honor of being the individual to have garnered the most TJOTW votes over the course of this award, largely coming on the back of the 2022 season opener against South Dakota State. You know the one where they got 7 points by not scoring a touchdown. It was announced this week that Brian would be moving on from his position as offensive coordinator at Iowa, a move which was promptly celebrated by the Hawkeyes and Northwestern missing the lowest over/under in history by nearly two touchdowns.

In seriousness, as much as a punchline as its been, it can’t be easy to walk away from a school that’s been tied to your family for decades that you yourself played and coached at for 15 years. I genuinely wish Brian the best wherever he ends up.

NOTE: For Ease of Counting, please use carats in your vote, like this: . Thank you, and thanks for participating!

HONORABLE MENTIONS

- Luckily, Tulane did not lose to East Carolina, because I’d sure hate to see an NY6 contending conference leader throw it all away on a really stupid loss against an awful team ranked about 100 spots below them.

And now the nominees for Week 10 are…

AIR FORCE FALCONS (lost to Army 23-3)

When the Playoff Committee came out with its initial rankings, the disrespect of the undefeated Falcons was real, wedging them at the back of the field, even behind a 1-loss Tulane. So obviously Air Force needed to make a statement against a hapless Army. “Give up the winning score less than two minutes into the game, surrender six turnovers, and lose by 20” was probably not that statement.

ARIZONA STATE SUN DEVILS (lost to Utah 55-3)

After a rotten start that made ASU considered the worst power conference team in America, the Sun Devils finally started to look alive with a game effort against Washington and then an upset of Washington State. Could they keep it going against a Utah team that basically had a roll of duct tape for an offense? Being outgained 513-83 is a pretty clear indication the answer was “no”. Again, 83 offensive yards. Woof.

FLORIDA GATORS (lost to Arkansas 39-36)

The Hogs had never won in the Swamp, and were all that stood between Florida and bowl eligibility. And despite a brutal scorejacking early on, the Gators stood with a chance to win with a short field goal as time ran out. But they missed it, got shut down in overtime to a field goal, and gave up the winning touchdown moments later. With LSU, Missouri, and Florida State remaining on the schedule, the Gators bowl hopes might just be fried… like bacon.

MIAMI-FL HURRICANES (lost to NC State 20-6)

With just two losses and a tilt against Florida State coming up, the Canes still had a shot to maybe make the ACC Championship game. That’s over and done with after gacking up four turnovers and being kept out of the endzone by the Wolfpack. It snaps a winning streak over NC State that dates back to 2008.

MINNESOTA GOLDEN GOPHERS (lost to Illinois 27-26)

Never, EVER underestimate Minnesota’s capacity to utterly screw themselves out of the Big Ten West title. Even this year, when they finally looked like they had a chance by finally downing their archnemesis Iowa, they follow it up by giving up a 48-yard touchdown in the final minute for their third consecutive disaster to Illinois. Come on, man.

NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH (lost to Clemson 31-23)

With games against Wake Forest and Stanford remaining, the Irish had a clear path to the NY6 and their chance at cracking their thirty year major bowl curse. Then Tyler from Spartanburg shot his mouth off, and an enraged Clemson leapt out to a 24-6 lead in the first half on the backs of a brutal pick six. Sam Hartman tried to lead his boys back, but came up short.

OKLAHOMA SOONERS (lost to Oklahoma State 27-24)

Yes, theoretically the same Oklahoma State that got pasted 33-7 by South Alabama. Why do you ask? Oh, right, something about the last Bedlam, and now being on the outside looking in on the Big 12 title picture while the Cowboys sit in that coveted spot instead.

WAKE FOREST DEMON DEACONS (lost to Duke 24-21)

Its been a rough year for the Deacons, and I can’t say for certain it could have turned around with an upset of Duke. But I do know that we’ll never know because Wake decided that a German Suplex was the best way to tackle a guy, the resulting penalty setting up the winning field goal. At least Brock Lesnar was impressed. Maybe.

WASHINGTON STATE COUGARS (lost to Stanford 10-7)

This Coug team is completely unrecognizable from the team that once sat 4-0 and ranked in the Top 15. The latest disaster comes against a Stanford team that they were favored by nearly two touchdowns against. The Cougs were held to just 57 yards in the second half and a brutal FOUR yards of rushing for the entire game.

WISCONSIN BADGERS (lost to Indiana 20-14)

When the sun rose in Bloomington on Saturday morning, Wisconsin found itself in a four-way tie atop the Big Ten West, All it needed to stay in that position was to beat an Indiana team that had lost 21 of its previous 22 conference games. The Badgers trailed nearly the entire game, and when a last ditch attempt ended up in Indiana’s hands, their fate was sealed. There’s not even a bizarre stat to explain this- they just simply got outplayed by the previously hapless Hoosiers.
