HOW TO READ THIS TABLE

Teams are ranked in their order from the Logo (note for mobile users: everywhere you see a “Logo” link, that means that inline flair is shown on old.reddit.com/r/cfb) AP Poll for Week 11. The column to the right of the team name shows the number of points that team received using the AP Poll’s Borda count rules. New for the 2023 season, the following two columns show information about each team’s previous and upcoming games. The following columns show how many votes for each ranking the team received. The ‘U’ column shows how many voters left the team unranked (off their ballots entirely). Gridlines are placed every 5 rows and columns for ease of reading. A thick line is placed below the 25th-ranked team to distinguish “ranked” teams above it to “receiving votes” teams below it.

Some cells are shaded to highlight points of interest. The green diagonal highlights how many voters ranked a team exactly where they ended up in the overall poll. For example, Logo Ole Miss is ranked 10th in this week’s poll, and 45 voters placed the Rebels exactly in their 10th spot. Values for which a team received no votes at that rank are shaded in red, while placements chosen by only exactly one voter are highlighted in blue. The most common selection (the mode) for each team is shaded yellow. Finally, since there are very few votes that ever end up near the top-right or bottom-left of the chart, those cells are filled in with black diagonally as much as possible without covering up any nonzero values. This helps naturally guide the eye while viewing the chart and helps locate the most unusual votes. We lightheartedly call these the “Wilner” diagonals.

NOTES FOR THIS WEEK

Two teams sit on the upper Wilner diagonal this time. Dave Reardon put Logo Oregon State 21st, and Steven Johnson left Logo Oklahoma off his ballot, both 9 spots below each team’s consensus rank in the poll. On the other side, the lower Wilner diagonal was, yet again, dependent on how you order the unique last-place votes. Take your pick of Logo North Carolina State (Jon Wilner), Logo Clemson (Chuck Landon), or Logo Texas A&M (Don Williams).

The team with the most votes matching their rank is Logo Louisville. 50 voters placed the Cardinals in 11th place. On the other hand, the team with the fewest votes matching their rank is Logo James Madison, with only 4 voters ranking the Dukes in their 21st spot. Altogether, 601 votes matched the team’s rank in the poll. Moreover, 403 votes were off by ±1 rank, 210 were off by ±2 ranks, 129 were off by ±3 ranks, 56 were off by ±4 ranks, and 36 were off by ±5 ranks.

The highest-ranked team to be left off a ballot is Logo Oklahoma, as Steven Johnson did not have the Sooners on his ballot. The lowest-ranked team to appear on all 63 ballots was Logo Kansas in 19th. The two closest teams were Logo North Carolina and Logo Liberty, with only 10 points keeping the Tar Heels over the Flames. Conversely, a whopping 154 points (2.4 ranks’ worth) separate Logo Louisville and Logo Oregon State, more than any other teams only one rank apart.

This week, teams in the receiving-votes section received 105 votes (6.7%) for a total of 275 points (1.3%). Logo Southern California received the highest vote of any team in that area, with Chuck Landon ranking the Trojans in his 17th slot. 246 distinct team-rank combinations occurred in votes this week, of which only 65 were unique. The most common vote was placing Logo Louisville 11th, cast by 50 voters (79%). The team with the lowest variation in votes was Logo Ole Miss, with a standard deviation of 0.496. On the other hand, nobody could agree on where to put Logo LSU. The Tigers had the largest standard deviation of 3.34.

This week, one team received their first vote of the season. Welcome to the 2023 AP Poll, Logo Southern Methodist! That brings the total number of teams to receive at least one vote this season up to 70. In addition, 6 teams received a vote this week after receiving none last week, but getting some in earlier weeks. Welcome back to Logo Duke, Logo North Carolina State, Logo Clemson, Logo Texas A&M, Logo West Virginia, and Logo Iowa! Unfortunately, the following 2 teams did not receive any votes this week after getting at least one last week. Depending on your rooting interests, better luck next week or good riddance to Logo Rutgers and Logo Miami.

There is a ton of consensus within the top 5 and top 10 this week. The top 5 is almost universally the five undefeated autonomy conference teams, with only 4 votes in that range going to other teams. That has remained pretty consistent throughout October. This week, there is complete unanimity on the top 10 teams, with the only disagreements being over how to order 6-10.

It is notable that Logo North Carolina is ranked despite appearing on fewer ballots than both Logo Kansas State and Logo Fresno State. Those two teams are tied with 73 points, but Logo Fresno State should be higher based on the Condorcet criterion. 21 voters ranked the Bulldogs, but not the Wildcats, while only 18 voters were the opposite. Of the 8 voters who ranked both teams, 5 of them had the Bulldogs higher. Except, on the other hand, Logo Kansas State is the Condorcet winner over Logo Liberty, so they can make the argument that they belong in the last ranking spot. While the split between voters that included only one team is 22-16 in favor of the Flames, among voters who included both teams, the Wildcats come out ahead 8-2. Logo Fresno State can not make that claim, losing their respective comparisons 16-15 and 11-3.

TEAM PROGRESSION WEEK BY WEEK

Now available in regular or dark mode! Some of the bugs have been cleaned up, but please let me know if you find any more. Each team that has received a vote in any week is included, even if they have since fallen out of the receiving-votes section entirely.

BALLOT CHANGES BY VOTER

Now you can quickly compare how each voter’s ballot changed this week and since the start of the season! Like the team progression tables, this is a bit wonky, but something is better than nothing. Please let me know what you think and give me any feedback or bug reports you notice.

Also, this made me realize how many repeat and near-repeat names the voters have this year. There are two Adams and a Ms. Adams; two Brians; a Creg and a Greg; two Daves and two Davids; two Emilies; a Jon, two Johns, a Johnny, and two Mr. Johnsons; two Jordans; two Kirks; a Ron and a Don; two Ryans; two Scotts; a Steve, Steven, Stefan, Stephen, and a Mr. Stephenson; two Toms; two Mr. Williams; a Mr. Murphy and a Mr. McMurphy; a Robert and a Bob; three Matts; four Mikes, a Michael, and a partridge in a pear tree.

NEXT PROJECT - TEAM SPECIFIC BALLOT CHANGES

Nobody read this last week or the week before, so I made the heading big this time.

Similar to the section above, this will look at changes in ballots from one week to the next. However, instead of comparing each team for each voter, these tables will consider one team and each row will show how each voter moved them compared to the previous week. This is a rough “it doesn’t even work yet” concept, so please provide any ideas you may have about what would be cool to see in it. Should I sort the table by the previous week’s ranks, the new ranks, or the change in rank?

And then there’s always some other stuff I want to do eventually:

  • Compare the changes between teams that played each other in the previous week. E.g. in Week 10, coming into this week, Logo Oklahoma had 1,010 points and Logo Oklahoma State had 77 points, for a combined 1,082. After this week, the Cowboys have 660 points and the Sooners dropped to 547 points, for a combined 1,207. Where did those extra 125 points come from? Which teams were adversely affected by this game that they didn’t play? On the other hand, are there any “losing” games, where the combined total of the teams went down after a game between two ranked teams?
  • Graphically show which pairs of teams’ orderings disagree with the Condorcet criterion. There is some interesting stuff going on this week between the last couple teams in and the last couple team out that would be nice to show visually. I’d be especially interested in situations where there is a head-to-head result, or a Circle of Suck situation where head-to-head consistency is impossible.
