Episode 5 of Invincible was one of the sickest episodes of Invincible yet. Lots of emotional tones and conflicts and the return of Nolan to earth to deliver unwanted news and apologies. The calm before the storm strongly applies to this episode. The return of Nolan is received better than I thought by Mark and Eve considering where they left off. The real pain comes from Debbie, and her reaction is completely justified, possibly even an under reaction. It is better in the show compared to the comics though and Sandra Oh does an immaculate job of conveying the emotions of Debbie.
The animation is good overall but not always consistent. Some scenes look very smooth, especially when characters are moving a lot. Details like hair and capes moving help bring scenes to life. At the same time, there are weaker moments. Shots where characters have their backs turned feel stiff and unfinished. The pan to Eve and Allen also feels a bit low effort compared to the rest of the scene when Nolan and Mark are talking. The action in this episode is one of its biggest strengths. The reintroduction of Tech Jacket is handled well and does not last too long. The show changes the character from the comics, which helps make her feel different and avoids overlap with Mark. The intro fight is paced well and avoids making Tech Jacket feel too overpowered or weak. There are still some issues with the action. The ship damage before the explosion feels rushed and not very detailed. It seems more like the plot needed it to happen than the animation building up to it. Oliver rushing to fight conquest feels forced. It almost mirrors Red Rush’s mistake and subsequent fate.
The fight with Conquest is the highlight of the episode. It is brutal and intense and easily one of the most violent fights in the series. The animation quality is clearly higher here, with more detail and longer sequences. The lack of moving mouths in space can look strange, but it makes sense because of how the show handles sound in space. There are still a few problems in this fight. Conquest feels a bit too confident, which makes him seem less believable as a fighter. Mark surviving the fight also feels a bit unrealistic and relies on plot armor. The fact that Conquest is not fully finished off is frustrating and stands out. his episode delivers strong emotional moments and some of the best action in the season. It has noticeable animation issues and a few plot conveniences, but the main story and performances carry it.
