The 2026 college football season kicks off 138 days from today, and since there are now 138 teams in FBS, it’s time to start counting down 1 team a day to the start of the season!
The cumulative link to the preseason rankings can be found here
Given that they’re the only team that failed to win a single game in 2025 and the owners of the longest losing streak in all of FBS (stretching back to October 26, 2024 – you have to go back to October 28, 2023 to find their last win against an FBS opponent), it shouldn’t be a surprise that UMass (high = 137, low = 138) comes in as the first team in the countdown (though you might be surprised that SP+ has somebody rated below them!). Head coach Joe Harasymiak enters his second season at the helm, and is really looking at a full rebuild (which, if you go winless, probably makes sense). That starts at OC, where Mike Bajakian left to be the QB coach of the Cleveland Browns and Harasymiak brought in Toledo assistant Max Warner to run the show.
Roster Outlook
None of the QBs from last season (season starter Brandon Rose, AJ Hairston or Grant Jordan – Jordan transferred to Oklahoma State and Hairston to Merrimack) are still with the Minutemen, and neither are leading rusher Brandon Hood (gone to Southern Miss) or leading receiver Jacquon Gibson (portaled to Virginia). With a 247 recruiting ranking of 119th (good for 10th in the MAC) and a portal ranking of 111th (which actually ranks 4th in the MAC) leading to an overall incoming class ranked 115th (10th in the MAC), Harasymiak will probably have to have found a couple of diamonds in the rough to turn things around. He did bring in former Florida A&M starter RJ Johnson, who threw for 2,600 yards for the Rattlers last season, and Virginia Tech backup William Watson to hopefully provide a spark. He also added Marshall RB Justin Williams-Thomas (200 yards in 2025) and Wisconsin WR Joseph Griffin to try to restock things. On the defensive side of the ball, leading tackler MLB Tyler Martin is back to anchor a defense that might need to be the saving grace for the Minutemen.
Schedule and outlook
9/3 at Rutgers
9/12 SACRED HEART
9/19 STONEHILL
9/26 at Sacramento State
10/3 EASTERN MICHIGAN
10/10 MIAMI (OH)
10/17 at Buffalo
10/24 at UConn
10/31 BYE
11/4 BALL STATE
11/11 at Toledo
11/18 AKRON
11/21 BYE
11/28 at Bowling Green
Let’s face it, after what looks like a rough season opener at Rutgers, UMass has to win at least 1 of those two FCS games (looking at you, Stonehill, who went 4-8 in 2025), and ideally both (though Sacred Heart won 8 games last year, and the fact that you can’t look at that as a gimme win pretty much says everything you need to know about the state of affairs at UMass right now), or this season will be an abject disaster. The conference slate is also not particularly unkind to the Minutemen as well, with five of the bottom 6 returning MAC teams (Northern Illinois moves to the Mountain West this year) on the schedule, so this really has to be the year for things to start to upswing. If everything breaks right, they could even end up on the cusp of a .500 season, a feat which hasn’t been seen in Amherst since UMass moved to FBS in 2012.
