Hi, anyone want to help (spoiler free!) explain the premise of this show? I am up to s1 ep5 so halfway through the first season. There’s been something bugging me the entire time which is when people talk about the “richies” - I assume they mean the rich people. This rubs me wrong for a couple reasons.
It’s post-apocalyptic. I mean, I guess let’s grant that people in power will find a way to stay in power and find a way to hoard their wealth. Okay, that’s a rather large thing to just assert in this scenario. It’s not as if there’s any new commercial enterprises to invest in. There’s been zero sign of that whatsoever.
The show so far is talking very little about the logistics of the whole thing, but one has to assume that eventually supplies will be depleted, food and air will run out, etc. Even accepting they kept the capitalistic structure where people perform labor, earn money, exchange money for goods, at some point there are no goods to buy. The supply will be gone. What use can a mythical vault filled with gold or an account filled with bitcoin possibly be?
And it’s not as if we’ve seen haves and have-nots, everyone seems to be pretty well off and provided for. Maybe they kept the capitalist style economy because that’s what people felt most familiar with, but in practice the whole thing so far has been shown as fairly egalitarian.
But lastly, screw the whole concept of equality because this is 25,000 people. They are by definition the elite of the elite, the cream of the crop, the ones who had the brains or the talent or yes, the wealth and connections to be chosen. It’s a bit rich to refer to a small cabal as “elite” when absolutely everyone here is the 1% of the 1%.
Does the show go on to explain any of this or are they being a bit sloppy here? And not that it’s been a big feature so far, just the offhand comment here or there, which honestly makes it worse because the show just assumes you’ll take it for granted and nod along.
