I have some information that I believe could prevent a potential scandal that could bring down college football in Kansas. In the summer of 2018, I lived at 1020 Missouri St. in Lawrence, KS, during the final season of David Beaty as head coach at KU.

Almost every day, I would take a run from my apartment at the bottom of the hill, around David Booth Memorial “Stadium,” up to the Memorial Carillon and Campanile at the top of the hill and back to my apartment.

When football practices started, I would occasionally slow down to take a look. Typically, the team would practice on the two practice fields next to the stadium, making it difficult to see anything. However, as the season started approaching, KU began having more practices in the stadium. One day, as I was finishing my run, I noticed that the southwest gate to the field had been left wide open with no one watching it.

Curious, I walked into the stadium, fully expecting someone to notice me and tell me to get out. To my surprise, several people (coaches, GAs, idk) noticed me walk in, wearing a fairly inconspicuous K-State shirt, but they didn’t say anything. Assuming that meant nobody cared, I sat down in section 3 of the stadium a few rows up. There were a couple of family members there that day too, so there were maybe 5-10 other people in the stands.

The football I proceeded to observe could only be described as comically bad. After witnessing Peyton Bender’s third fumble, I couldn’t help myself and I pulled out my phone to record a couple of plays to share online. This apparently crossed the line for the KU coaches who asked me to leave a few moments later.

Given the recent allegations made against Michigan for attending and recording opposing teams’ games, I wanted to self-report this violation and throw myself on the mercy of the court. I only wanted to watch a football practice because I think football is fun. Recording the practice is unacceptable, but it felt necessary because KU’s team was so impossibly bad.
