What have been your nightmare travel stories?

I’ve been late for a game because of a delayed flight. I’ve had to sell tickets because airfare jumped almost doubled in price. I’ve been stuck in traffic driving hours away for a neutral game.

The worst for me was actually on the way home from a game with my girlfriend and my best friend. The 2011 LSU Oregon game in Jerry, which we got tickets to 2 days before the game, was a blast! We went out and celebrated afterwards then took a cab back to the hotel. A lovely couple had breakfast with us the next morning, the husband in Oregon gear and the wife in purple and gold. We grabbed a latte on the way to see where Kennedy was assassinated. Three people were in line in front of us, but people were lined up a block around the building as we left the Book Depository. Time to drive to Baton Rouge!

Texas was in a severe drought at the time. The interstate traffic was horrible as tens of thousands of LSU fans headed home. Everything came to a grinding halt as because of the fires on the side of the road and in the median. What should have been a 6 hour drive looked more like 9 hours. Unexpected and annoying but not the worst. Once we finally got into Louisiana, things changed. Tropical Storm Lee had made its way inland. The rain was incessant. I could barely see as I drove though it. The afternoon looked like night. I made the call to stop in my family’s cabin in central Louisiana. We’d been on the road for 12 hours at the point. The power was out, so we rode out the storm in darkness, with the only sounds being the heavy rain and howling winds. Everything was relentless. I don’t remember sleeping but I know I did because I woke up to property damage, calling in for work, and having to wait for the power company. On top of everything, I still had a 3 hour drive home. Again, the total drive was only supposed to be 6 hours.
