We see British actors playing “Standard American” all the time, but it usually falls apart the second they have to do a specific zip code. A lot of the time “Southern” just becomes a generic drawl, or “New York” becomes a cartoonish mobster voice.
However, some of them absolutely nail the nuance. Kate Winslet in Mare of Easttown (that Delco accent is notoriously impossible) and Christian Bale in The Fighter come to mind. Idris Elba - the Wire had me fooled.
