It’s most likely due to logistics and time constraints, but it still seems like a strange choice to put pretty much no fantasy stuff in the new Harry Potter trailer.

We get a couple of brief in-camera shots of Hagrid, a quick glimpse of the ghost teacher in the background, and precisely one second of Snape with his wand lit. Other than that, zilch.

Obviously the trailer has done huge numbers regardless and you can push a new Harry Potter purely on the brand name, but when you’re trying to sell the thing to a new generation and win over the sceptics, putting out a trailer with only one second of magic seems like a misfire.

I’ve also seen people say the framing and editing almost has an AI feel to it, and I can sort of see where they’re coming from. A lot of establishing shots and slow one-second character close-ups with little movement and no dialogue. The muted teal and orange colour palette also leaves it feeling slightly cold.

The next trailer will probably be more dynamic and lean into the fantasy stuff more but it makes me wonder if the first trailer was rushed out for HBO Max’s UK launch, and if the series as a whole will end up being Christmas Rushed.
