Every week I see coaches calling timeouts early in the half or on their side of the field. Versus just taking a delay of game. It reminds me of basketball player wasting a TO early in the game to avoid a jump ball. It’s almost an instinctive habit. Rarely is it the best decision, unless you’re on the scoring side of the 50, or it’s a crucial 3rd and short.
Edit: people are conflating the use of TO for a delay versus a mishap or potential bad matchup. You know like having 10 men on the field for the game deciding play, looking at you Marcus Freeman.
Timeouts are often left unused. They’re of little value in blowouts. However, they can be exceptionally valuable in close games. 5 yards on 2nd down, early in the half rarely has as much significance.
