The late great QB-kicker George Blanda has a whopping 2002* points: 9 rushing TD, 335 FG, and 943 XP. The latter mark is still an NFL record, and the 2002 points are 7th all-time.

* Why the asterisk? Because many of Blanda’s points came in games where he was solely a kicking specialist. If you look at the first Statmuse link, you’ll see Blanda credited with 1017. You can see the distribution of those points by season in the 2nd Statmuse link.

However, this number is flawed. For example, he’s credited with the full 116 points in 1967, a season where he had just 38 pass attempts. It’s fair to call him a specialist that year for the most part.

So how many points did Blanda score as a QB? Using his Football Reference game log, I counted all of his points in games where he threw multiple passes. The results are as follows (apologies for the strange time intervals):

Seasons Points Points as QB
1949-1952 141 51
1953-1955 177 177
1956-1958 221 83
1960-1961 227 208
1962-1965 284 284
1966-1975 950 280
Totals 2002 1083

Josh Allen is 589 points short of 1083. He needs 99 more rushing TD (or 197 FG if he wishes to become a kicker). Highly unlikely, to say the least.

For context, Emmitt Smith, the all-time leader in rushing TD, is 85 ahead of Allen.

However, 2nd place Bob Waterfield has 569**, 75 points ahead of Allen. That’s **13 rushing TD**, which is achievable next season and a virtual lock in 2 seasons, barring a radical shift in his game.

**Waterfield has 573 career points. I subtracted 4 points from a game where he recorded 1 pass attempt.
