The Tank Job of the Week is an award for the FBS team that did the best job of humiliating itself over the weekend. Whether they blew a large lead, choked away a spot in the limelight, lost a game they had absolutely no right losing, or completely screwed everything on a last second blunder, the TJOTW winner sets the gold standard in college football misery.
PREVIOUS WINNERS
- Baylor Bears (lost to Texas State 42-31)
- Nevada Wolf Pack (lost to Idaho 33-6)
- Oklahoma State Cowboys (lost to South Alabama 33-7)
- Minnesota Golden Gophers (lost to Northwestern 37-34)
- UCF Knights (lost to Baylor 36-35)
- Miami-FL Hurricanes (lost to Georgia Tech 23-20
- Boise State Broncos (lost to Colorado State 31-30)
- North Carolina Tar Heels (lost to Virginia 31-27)
LAST WEEK: Obviously it was North Carolina and losing their undefeated season to a dreadful Virginia team, but we did see a solid second place outing from Michigan State, mainly because of the memes over putting Hitler on the scoreboard. And while I get it, the Spartans were only reiched, I mean ranked 79th in the Massey composite, and I think San Diego State largely got left off the hook for their dreadful shutout that finally put Nevada in the win column.
Sadly, this week is a bit more of a quantity over quality week. We have a LOT of nominees- twelve to be exact, and a couple that certainly could have been nominated but got stuffed into Honorable Mentions because there just wasn’t quite enough there for a full entry. Anyways, let’s have at it!
NOTE: For Ease of Counting, please use carats in your vote, like this: . Thank you, and thanks for participating!
HONORABLE MENTIONS
- James Madison and Jacksonville State being bowl ineligible
- The Calgary Dinos blew a playoff spot by failing to kneel, fumbling, and letting Manitoba score the points they needed to make up the differential to take their spot.
- Dabo’s “Maybe we should lose more to lighten up the bandwagon” comment paying dividends.
- Colorado players flexing while they’re ejected for targeting
- Justin Wilcox calling a timeout just before Cal’s two point conversion attempt, thus killing the Bears ability to prevent the clock from running out
- Houston got ritualistically abused by K-State in a 41-0 thrashing.
- Texas State wasn’t exactly supposed to beat Troy but those five turnovers sure didn’t help
- Miami needing to force overtime to survive Virginia
- Colorado State being flagged for throwing snowballs at Air Force
- Good god, Tulsa. Are you guys okay?
And now, the nominees for Week 9 are…
DUKE BLUE DEVILS (lost to Louisville 23-0)
Duke is the very essence of the “I didn’t hear no bell” meme. Only… the bell they didn’t hear was the one to start the match. The Blue Devils barely managed to scrape together 200 yards and had just nine first downs as the Cardinals easily had their way with them.
MARYLAND TERRAPINS (lost to Northwestern 33-27)
It’s okay guys. October’s over now.
NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS (lost to Georgia Tech 46-42)
Oops, they did it again! What’s “again”, you might ask? Is it losing to a team with a losing record for the second consecutive week? Or is it the fact that this is the third year in a row a ranked UNC team has embarrassed itself by blowing a multiscore lead to the Yellow Jackets? The answer is “yes”.
NORTH TEXAS MEAN GREEN (lost to Memphis 45-42)
It was nearly the Tigers on here, as UNT fired off twenty-one consecutive points in the fourth quarter to take a 42-38 lead with just forty-seven ticks left. But then Memphis went 75 yards in just 35 seconds, including dropping the lethal bomb from 36 yards out with just twelve seconds left to rip this wild one right out of the MG’s hands.
OKLAHOMA SOONERS (lost to Kansas 38-33)
Undefeated season is gone as the Sooners gave up the terminal touchdown with just fifty-five seconds left, cementing their first loss to the Jayhawks since 1997. Sooners were hampered by going just 2 for 10 on third downs and giving up over 100 yards in penalties.
OREGON STATE BEAVERS (lost to Arizona 27-24)
Dawgs… wait, no, BEAVS die in the desert? In fairness, the real OSU was only a three point favorite in Tuscon, and they only lost to the resurgent Wildcats by three. Its just… they ran a fake field goal (and I mean literally ran despite being 16 yards out) to end the half, and that blunder proved the difference to send OSU tumbling in the rankings and putting their Pac-12 hopes on critical.
SAM HOUSTON BEARKATS (lost to UTEP 37-34)
Despite being the only remaining winless team in the FBS, the Bearkats had managed to avoid their first ever TJOTW nomination- until now. SHSU took it too UTEP, and was up 27-13 with just twenty minutes to go, only to then promptly fall apart and give up 21 straight. They did battle back to tie it back up, but a last second field goal by the Miners crushed the Kats to a devastating 0-8 record.
SOUTH ALABAMA JAGUARS (lost to Louisiana 33-20)
USA came in 12 point favorites over the Cajuns and with a chance to stay atop the pack in the rugged Sun Belt West. Five turnovers later, and the Jaguars have been reverse-spreaded and sit admist the quagmire that is the SBW midpack.
UCF KNIGHTS (lost to West Virginia 41-28)
This was it. They were a touchdown favorite over the Mountaineers. It was homecoming, which the Knights hadn’t lost on since 2016. The Bounce House was full and living up to its name. This was the moment the Knights were going to get off the schneid and grab their first ever Big 12 win. And then they threw three interceptions, surrendered a fumble, and watched WVU go on a 17-0 fourth quarter run to ice the game, and now the Gus Bus is burning as brightly as those couches in Morgantown.
UNLV REBELS (lost to Fresno State 31-24)
Oh, Rebels. In a game where they had a chance to knock off a perennial MW juggernaut to stay undefeated in conference, UNLV had a chance to come back and tie in the final minute. Only, the surefire touchdown pass bounced out of the receivers hands, and the follow-up play resulted in an immediate interception to seal the game. Its still a remarkable turnaround in Las Vegas, but this kept it from becoming a truly special season.
UTAH UTES (lost to Oregon 35-6)
The eyes of the college football world were on Salt Lake City this week for a huge heavyweight slugfest between two one-loss Pac-12 teams. Utah never even got out of the starting block, and the game was pretty much over by halftime, largely ending the Utes hopes of a three-peat in the Pac-12.
WYOMING COWBOYS (lost to Boise State 32-7)
What had been a promising season sputters on the Smurf Turf with the Cowboys suffocated for just 112 yards and 8 first downs.
