I want to make it very clear at the outset that this isn't a bait post nor is it some kind of denial post. There are plenty of people on reddit within certain subs that are looking for any excuse to call something white supremacy and this post is an honest ask for information.

After the Atlanta shooting suddenly every MSM outlet is reporting on the "shocking" rise in hate crimes against Asians but the police stated at the outset that the Atlanta shooting was not racially motivated and what little information I can dig up showed that there were around 3,800 incidents against Asians in the US in 2020 that could be described as racially motivated.

The only problem (from what I can see) is that those incidents don't distinguish between brief verbal altercations (someone yelling a slur because of covid or a go back where you came from comment) and actual assaults and even murders. It also means that only 2 hundredths of a percent (0.002) of the entire Asian population was subject to harassment.

So is there any scholarly research people can cite to show this is a problem in the US? I'm open to having my mind changed but right now it seems like this is almost a non-issue that the media is drumming up because support for BLM is waning so the blue-checkmarks and media outlets are looking for the next wave of victims they can exploit.
