Mexico’s Security Minister Omar García Harfuch is used to being seen in a suit, leading high-stakes operations against drug cartels. But lately, he’s been showing up in a very different avatar, as a miniature doll, sometimes dressed as Batman, and sometimes even shirtless.

Across markets in Mexico, his face now appears on everything from soft toys and blankets to cardboard cutouts and novelty merchandise. These dolls, popularly dubbed “Harfuchitos,” have now gone viral.

The sudden rise in Harfuch’s popularity isn’t random. It follows a major security operation on February 22 that killed notorious cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, also known as El Mencho.

Harfuch played a key role in the raid, which was deeply personal for him, the cartel boss had previously been linked to a 2020 assassination attempt that left him seriously injured.

Since then, his image has transformed. The 44-year-old is now widely seen as a national figure—part tough cop, part celebrity—with analysts even viewing him as a potential presidential contender in 2030.
