With a week off under their belts following their cathartic win over the rival Michigan State Spartans, the Michigan Wolverines roll into week 10 sitting at 8-0 and ranked 2nd in the AP Poll. However, lurking up next for the Wolverines are the unranked Purdue Boilermakers who have their second chance in as many years to add another unsuspecting top 5 team to their ever-growing list of victims. Will Purdue keep its hopes of bowl eligibility alive or will Michigan continue its seemingly unstoppable march towards Indianapolis?
2 years ago I shared my findings on Purdue’s history of upsetting top 5 teams while unranked with you fine folks and noted a few trends I had noticed along the way. While the Boilermakers have struggled thus far this year, the program is known for upending the season of Top 5 teams. Not only is this Purdue’s second straight crack at knocking off the top 5 Wolverines in as many years, Michigan also comes in ranked 2nd, which are the Spoilermakers most frequent victims, sporting a 5-7 record.
Series Notes
The last time top 5 Michigan took on unrakned Purdue was in Indianapolis in the Big Ten Championship game as the Wolverines clinched their ticket to the playoffs against a Purdue team coached by a Jeff Brohm with one foot already out the door on the way to Louisville. Historically, Michigan is unranked Purdue’s 2nd most frequent top 5 opponent with 12 prior meetings with Purdue sporting a 2-10 record over these meetings. The Spoilermakers have not knocked off a top 5 Michigan team since 1976 when the Boilermakers defeated the top ranked Wolverines 16-14. Top 5 Michigan has lost to unranked Purdue once in 6 tries in Ann Arbor, falling to the Spoilermakers 21-20 in 1964. Those Wolverines would go on to finish 9-1 with a Big Ten Championship, a Rose Bowl victory, and would finished ranked 4th while Purdue finished unranked.
ALERT:
A Spoilermaker Watch has been issued as conditions are favorable for the development of another unranked Purdue upset over a top 5 team. Michigan has looked nearly unstoppable thus far this year, will the winning ways continue within the friendly confines of the Big House? Or will the scandal embroiled Wolverines get caught napping ahead of a trip to Happy Valley? Purdue Pete has not knocked off a top 5 team since 2021. Is he still satisfied or does he hunger for another teams dreams? Only time will tell as he is always watching, always waiting, always ready for his next victim.
