Infantino said this week that the next tournament “could be more” than a 32-team event. It is also known he would like the competition to be held more regularly than every four years — his ultimate ambition would be for it to be staged every two years or even annually.

Any attempt at expansion, such as to 48 teams like the men’s and women’s World Cup, would however draw the stiffest of opposition from Uefa. It would also oppose increasing the number of European teams from 12, or holding the tournament more regularly.
