I was thinking the other day about the number of times I’ve watched a trailer for an upcoming Netflix show and thought it looked great, only for the trailer to end with “coming soon”, or to have a release date in a month’s time. Without fail, I’ve completely forgotten about its existence by the time the show drops.
This method of advertising has always been the norm, and it worked great when shows were fewer and marketing budgets allowed for multiple trailers leading up to release. Unfortunately we live in an era where content is overwhelming and attention spans are short. I can’t help but wonder if it would be a more successful marketing method to post trailers for shows on the day of release (or maximum one week before). Maybe I’m just a goldfish, but I like the idea of being able to immediately watch something I’ve just found out about, and I feel like it might help increase viewership.
Multiple trailers/more marketing budget is by far the better option of course, but that doesn’t seem to be the industry norm anymore.
