Hi! I am a writer and have recently been developing a tv show idea! I personally like musical episodes in tv shows as long as the actors are musically talented as I don’t want to be hearing shit singing while enjoying a show. However, many people despise musical episodes and it can easily ruin a show for some people. Now I never want to ruin my show for others but I feel like a musical episode would be really fun for my show. I do feel like some shows don’t need one though and in ways that can be something that destroys a show but my show, being a FRIENDS/Gilmore Girls/Shameless type show, it feels like it would fit.

Now here’s where the SPOILERS come in:

Grey’s Anatomy - Musical episode is debated even now on whether or not it was good. The issue that many people have with it is that they stuck a very important storyline, Callie and Arizona getting in a car crash and Callie almost losing her baby and dying, into an admittedly silly episode style. But who could stop Sara Ramirez from singing so beautifully in the show!

Riverdale - Now this show has MULTIPLE musical episodes, one every season starting in season 2. This show also has MAJOR problems that made it go downhill that don’t involve the musical episodes. However the musical episodes did always make sense, to me at least, because the characters were in high school putting on theatre productions. I admittedly like the musical episodes especially because nobody was really that bad of a singer. My show, however, is not set in high school so maybe it might not work for my show.

9-1-1 - This show hasn’t had a musical episode so far but I’m in the fandom for it and some people seem to really want an episode that allows the characters to sing. The show has powerhouse broadway singer Tracie Thoms in its cast and Jennifer Love Hewitt has sang before in a karaoke scene and has even had a song cover featured in an episode fairly recently, she is a very good singer.

Anyway all this to say, musical episodes are looked at in so many different ways in so many different shows. Could it be the fact that the show makes no sense for a musical episode that makes people look down on it, or could the actors not be good singers. I really don’t know. I don’t want to ruin my show by a silly episode idea. I can tell you right now though, if I were to have a musical episode, my main actors would be great singers. It’d probably be something I would look for while casting.
