Reading another thread on here yesterday gave me a thought. How hard would it be to create a "news organization" these days? Honestly, if you think about what passes as a news organization these days, how do we know that a lot of these sites aren't just some guy in their basement writing articles under the guise of real journalists?

How would you know? You could easily fabricate people by using one of the nifty tools for creating realistic faces online. Most media these days is just linking back to an AP/Reuters article and almost copying/pasting the content into your own "news article". No one bothers to check anything out; circular citations galore. How many articles do you see that start with "As reported by ABC News" with a link to their article, where the remainder of the article is just the regurgitated article with some modifications?

You could even get a blue twitter checkmark fairly easily. Throw in some popular hashtags, put up some ads... you're now a bonafide news organization that won't be questioned by 99.9% of people.

Tell me I'm wrong and that you have to be anything more than this to be a news organization in 2021.
