I don’t know if it’s just me, but what started as a very exciting combine is quickly becoming borderline unbelievable.

It feels like I’ve seen damn near half of the positional records for combine events broken in the last few days. Records that have been held for decades are not just getting beat, they’re getting shattered. Even the guys that aren’t breaking records are still posting extremely impressive scores. A 10 RAS is supposed to mean athletic freak, but how many 10s/near 10s have we already seen this year? It’s seemingly across all positions groups, even those that were pretty universally considered to be weak this year.

The level of to-the-minute coverage on the combine this year has also been pretty insane. I’m not saying it’s a conspiracy or anything, but it is starting to look a little weird that there’s this huge media push for the combine that we haven’t really seen before and all these records are getting broken.

Edit: Getting a lot of responses saying it’s just a regular result of targeted training. If that was the case why wouldn’t we have already seen this explosion, or more realistically, a more gradual shift over time? These kids didn’t have a markedly different experience coming up than those from last year’s combine or the one before, which did not see similar explosions in performance.

What seems like a more likely explanation one user posted is the use of those carbon plated running shoes exploding in popularity over the last year. I assumed they had been banned at the combine like they have been in pretty much all track and field sports, but that seems to not be the case.
