I’m in a vast minority here, but I thoroughly enjoyed the ending where Oliver and Maryanne shut Bree down when she tries to ruin their lives. Yes, this couple is absolutely fucked and aren’t good people but who’s Bree to judge when she willingly partook in an affair with a married man and had audacity to get mad at them once she realized they’re in an open relationship. Let’s also not pretend that Oliver is a pedo on a Epstein island level. Of course whatever he’s doing is wrong and he should at very least be fired, but the girls he gets with are not innocent victims, rather active participants, and initiators at times. We were all young and dumb once but how many of you allowed yourself to fuck a married man? Be honest. It takes a certain kind of person with a certain set of morals or lack thereof, to allow oneself to engage in such affair. Bree didn’t go after Oliver for a cause, she realized she’s not special. The guy had a system in place and a wife who backed him up. He didn’t even notice Bree was out of his life and quickly moved on to a new freshman, so her ego couldn’t handle it. I would argue that Bree is a Stephen in a softer, female form. Unlike him though she looks completely innocent- a definition of wolf in sheep’s clothing. Both came from poverty and quickly realized that in this world you have to use whatever set of skills you got to manipulate people to get what you want. Stephen is more strategic and petty, while Bree is fully milking “the innocent cute girl, all alone in this world trope.” This is why they dislike each other so much, yet are able to see through and understand one another. Perhaps in different circumstances, she wouldn’t resort to this tactic but Evan’s cheating set her off and gradually turned her into a villain. The fact that she was so eager to ruin Lucy’s life over a man she no longer cared for, without even confronting her first, speaks volumes. Not to mention, all while cheating on Evan with her friend’s boyfriend. In the finale, when the truth is revealed, she doesn’t choose Wrigley first. She’s shown trying to convince Evan it’s one of Stephen’s lies. If it wasn’t for Wrigley coming clean to Evan, would she even consider leaving Evan for him? She would have stayed married and kept cheating on Evan fully taking advantage of the lifestyle he can provide. Not like I feel bad for Evan or anything, but characters like Bree demonstrate that evil doesn’t always come in a “Stephen” form. Sometimes it’s the most angelic-looking person you’d never suspect. Makes you wonder if the happy ending of Wrigley getting with Bree was even a happy ending for him if that’s the type of person she is.
