I had seen repeatedly on reddit that this show is premium quality and I kept skipping over it, but…after realizing a lot of the reason I don’t get into shows is because I don’t care for how most shows end, I decided to look at finales that people considered to be high quality. This show was mentioned quite a bit. After finishing the pilot, I can say that…wow. This is not a show you can look at your phone or half pay attention to. From the opening scene you have to pay close attention because right away you’re introduced to actions that have everything to do with each other. I kind of spaced out on a conversation the FBI agents had with one another and it tied directly to a detail about our main characters that would otherwise have you confused (it has to do with their accents). I actually took note of how many times I checked a text or something and had to rewind the episode. I can’t binge the series either, there was so much to digest in the pilot that I would need to probably watch one episode a day, and my light research trying to avoid spoilers suggests the entire show is like this. The action in Episode 1 is back to back. Yet, it’s not overwhelming, and it struck me that really what it is…it’s just good television. What’s covered in this episode, I feel (and I could be wrong, but I feel…) would possibly be stretched out to 3-4 episodes if the same series was made today by Netflix/Disney. This more tells me that writing shows nowadays is accounting for our shorter attention spans (in not all cases, but in many) by doing a whole lot of telling and not showing. I’m not television aficionado, but as far as I’m watching, the writer does not hold your hand - you must pay attention to … the entire episode to gain insight into their motivations and personalities. That’s not to say the show is pretentious, either. You understand the conflict and what’s at stake fairly quickly, I was just surprised by how invested I was in EVERY single second of the show.
I am on just the pilot of course, but it’s just a really good show, I highly recommend it if you have not seen it.
