Nicolas Jackson is expected to return to Chelsea this summer because he has not played enough games for Bayern Munich to trigger the obligation-to-buy clause in his loan agreement, and the German side are unlikely to pursue a separate permanent deal.

Bayern signed Jackson last summer for an initial loan fee of £14.3million, with a further £56.2million due once the forward reached a specific number of appearances in the Bundesliga and Champions League. That figure is understood to be about 40 appearances, and would require Jackson to feature in at least 45 minutes in each of them.

So far, however, the Senegal international has made only 22 appearances in all competitions — with his club season interrupted by the Africa Cup of Nations — of which only seven have been for longer than 45 minutes.
