This show is better than any of us expected it to be.
With so many universes in the entertainment industry, one could get universe fatigue (if that’s even a thing) from all the spinoffs: Marvel with their countless live-action shows, Star Wars, Harry Potter, and now Game of Thrones.
I think for me, I was getting a little worn out from the GoT universe, so I didn’t expect much from this new show.
But, as Michael Corleone would say, “just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in.”
I think the reason why this show works better than HotD for me is the main character, Ser Duncan the Tall, played brilliantly by Peter Claffey. Not since Jon Snow (or any of the Stark family) has there been a character that you really root for to win. You could make the argument for some of the characters in HotD, but I think Dunk is a truly redeeming character. It’s quite rare to find that in the GoT universe.
For that reason, and for the brilliant writing and supporting characters, I find this show more enjoyable than HotD.
