This show gave me the coziest of feelings. As a gamer nerd and an unrepented Street Fighter player, I found a lot to like in Hi Score Girl. But it is definitely not a one trick pony.
Just like when I watched Friends finale almost 2 decades ago and that airport scene will forever live rent-free in my head (that and so many others), Hi Score Girl can easily tap into that romantic comedy territory just as masterfully as it does into cozy arcade culture.
I am 42 years old and I probably watched 1 anime show in my whole life. This would be the second one.
It is nerdy, it is cozy and the three main characters are just so memorable and endearing. I strongly recommend you watch it even if you have a STRONG aversion to animated series. I think Netflix has it.
