TABLE | Dark Mode | Colorblind-Friendly | Black And White

HOW TO READ THIS TABLE

Teams are ranked in their order from the Logo (note for mobile users: everywhere you see a “Logo” link, that means that inline flair is shown on old.reddit.com/r/cfb) AP Poll for Week 9. The column to the right of the team name shows the number of points that team received using the AP Poll’s Borda count rules. New for the 2023 season, the following two columns show information about each team’s previous and upcoming games. The following columns show how many votes for each ranking the team received. The ‘U’ column shows how many voters left the team unranked (off their ballots entirely). Gridlines are placed every 5 rows and columns for ease of reading. A thick line is placed below the 25th-ranked team to distinguish “ranked” teams above it to “receiving votes” teams below it.

Some cells are shaded to highlight points of interest. The green diagonal highlights how many voters ranked a team exactly where they ended up in the overall poll. For example, Logo Penn State is ranked 10th in this week’s poll, and 18 voters placed the Nittany Lions exactly in their 10th spot. Values for which a team received no votes at that rank are shaded in red, while placements chosen by only exactly one voter are highlighted in blue. The most common selection (the mode) for each team is shaded yellow. Finally, since there are very few votes that ever end up near the top-right or bottom-left of the chart, those cells are filled in with black diagonally as much as possible without covering up any nonzero values. This helps naturally guide the eye while viewing the chart and helps locate the most unusual votes. We lightheartedly call these the “Wilner” diagonals. Last season’s practice of trolling the team whose rank matches the week number is going to continue this year because I am a bad programmer and can’t make it work again.

NOTES FOR THIS WEEK

Two teams sit on the upper Wilner diagonal this time. Dave Reardon ranked Logo North Carolina 25th, while three voters (Jon Wilner, Ron Counts, and Steven Johnson) left Logo Louisville off their ballots. Those placements are 8 spots below teach team’s consensus rank in the poll. On the other side, the lower Wilner diagonal depends on how you order the teams who received only one vote for last place. It’s either set by Logo Wisconsin (Sean Reider) or Logo Nevada Las Vegas (Ron Counts).

The team with the most votes matching their rank is Logo Oklahoma. 41 voters placed the Sooners in 6th place. On the other hand, the team with the fewest votes matching their rank is Logo UCLA, with only 5 voters ranking the Bruins in their 23rd spot. Altogether, 510 votes matched the team’s rank in the poll. Moreover, 533 votes were off by ±1 rank, 243 were off by ±2 ranks, 126 were off by ±3 ranks, 71 were off by ±4 ranks, and 28 were off by ±5 ranks. The highest-ranked team to be left off a ballot is Logo Louisville, as 3 voters did not have the Cardinals on their ballot. The lowest-ranked team to appear on all 63 ballots was Logo North Carolina in 17th. The two closest teams were Logo Tulane and Logo UCLA, with only 5 points keeping the Green Wave over the Bruins. Conversely, a whopping 150 points separate Logo Utah and Logo Notre Dame, more than any other teams only one rank apart. There are three mode flips with week, with Logo Texas over Logo Oregon, Logo Mississippi over Logo Utah, and Logo Tulane over Logo Rose Bowl State.

This week, teams in the receiving-votes section received 46 votes (2.9%) for a total of 101 points (0.5%). Logo Florida received the highest vote of any team in that area, with Scott Springer ranking the Gators in his 17th slot. 225 distinct team-rank combinations occurred in votes this week, of which 49 were unique. The most common vote was placing Logo Oklahoma 6th, cast by 41 voters (65%). The team with the lowest variation in votes was Logo Oklahoma with a standard deviation of 0.721. On the other hand, nobody could agree on where to put Logo Louisville. The Cardinals had the largest standard deviation of 3.11. This week, two teams received their first votes of the season. Welcome to the 2023 AP Poll, Logo UNLV, and Logo Rutgers! That brings the total number of teams to receive at least one vote this season up to 68. In addition, 3 teams received a vote this week after receiving none last week, but getting some in earlier weeks. Welcome back to Logo Wisconsin, Logo Toledo, and Logo Kansas State! Unfortunately, the following 6 teams did not receive any votes this week after getting at least one last week. Depending on your rooting interests, better luck next week or good riddance to Logo West Virginia, Logo Washington State, Logo Wyoming, Logo Iowa, Logo Kansas, and Logo Clemson.

TEAM PROGRESSION WEEK BY WEEK

Now available in regular or dark mode! Some of the bugs have been cleaned up, but please let me know if you find any more. Each team that has received a vote in any week is included, even if they have since fallen out of the receiving-votes section entirely.

BALLOT CHANGES BY VOTER

Now you can quickly compare how each voter’s ballot changed this week and since the start of the season! Like the team progression tables, this is a bit wonky, but something is better than nothing. Please let me know what you think and give me any feedback or bug reports you notice.

Also, this made me realize how many repeat and near-repeat names the voters have this year. There are two Adams and a Ms. Adams; two Brians; a Creg and a Greg; two Daves and two Davids; two Emilies; a Jon, two Johns, a Johnny, and two Mr. Johnsons; two Jordans; two Kirks; a Ron and a Don; two Ryans; two Scotts; a Steve, Steven, Stefan, Stephen, and a Mr. Stephenson; two Toms; two Mr. Williams; a Mr. Murphy and a Mr. McMurphy; a Robert and a Bob; three Matts; four Mikes, a Michael, and a partridge in a pear tree.

NEXT PROJECT - TEAM SPECIFIC BALLOT CHANGES

Nobody read this last week, so I made the heading big this time.

Similar to the section above, this will look at changes in ballots from one week to the next. However, instead of comparing each team for each voter, these tables will consider one team and each row will show how each voter moved them compared to the previous week. This is a rough “it doesn’t even work yet” concept, so please provide any ideas you may have about what would be cool to see in it. Should I sort the table by the previous week’s ranks, the new ranks, or the change in rank?
