Ok, I know this is a really niche audience, but people have asked me to update the standings of the B1G Tiebreakers. Just for the uninitiated, this attempts to resolve the question: Who represents the B1G East if Michigan, PSU, and an Ohio state university all go full round robin against each other, and win the rest of their games. Since OSU beat PSU, this presumes PSU beats UM, and UM beats OSU. (both home teams winning, btw)

Let me explain:… no, that is too long; let me sum up: The tiebreaker rules are deadlocked in a three way tie until step B.5.a. That’s where the records of the West division opponents come into play. See:

If two teams cross division records are tied for the lead at the end of the season, the team whose opponents fared worse is eliminated, and the nominee is based on the H2H result.

Remember, Michigan plays Nebraska, Minnesota, and Purdue. They are currently 5-7.

OSU plays Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Purdue. They are currently 6-6.

PSU plays Iowa, Northwestern, and Illinois. They are currently 5-9.

However, to get a clearer picture, one must add in future games. Michigan must still play Purdue, so (given our assumptions for this 3 way tie), Michigan’s opponents would necessarily fall to 5-8.

Similarly, OSU has yet to play Wisconsin and Minnesota, so their group would necessarily fall to 6-8

Finally, PSU has already played their cross division teams, so their record would remain the same at 5-9.

But, we aren’t done yet: We can also add in games that the groups play against each other. Sure, it’s 1 win and one loss, but that helps to clarify the picture even more.

Michigan’s group still has the Neb/Pur and Minn/Purdue matchups, so Michigan’s group moves to 7-10. (.411)

OSU’s group still has the Wis/Minn game and the Minn/Purdue, so OSU’s group moves to 8-10. (.444) <—new leader!

Finally, PSU’s group has Iowa/NW, Iowa/Illi, and NW/Illinois still ahead, so their group moves to 8-12 (.400)

So, based on this past weekend’s games, not only has OSU defeated PSU on the field, but PSU got hammered on the West side of the division, and no longer have the lead in the event of a tie.

So, what’s ahead for this upcoming week?

Maryland plays Northwestern…PSU will be rooting for the Wildcats, while Michigan and OSU should root for the Terrapins.

Mich State plays Minnesota… Michigan and OSU should root for the G. Gophers, while Penn State should root for the Spartans.

Nebraska plays Purdue… Michigan should root for the Huskers, while the evil empire will cheer on the Boilermakers

As ever, my cute little western buddies, go out and make your daddies proud! Your games matter!
