Jack Grealish is set for surgery on a stress fracture in his foot, with Everton expecting him to miss the rest of the season.

David Moyes offered the update on his on-loan playmaker after further consultations with specialists over the past week. The injury appears to end Grealish’s hopes of making Thomas Tuchel’s England World Cup squad.

“We believe he is probably going to need surgery,” Moyes, the Everton manager, said. “And it probably rules him out for the rest of the season.”

A £50million option to buy was included in the loan by City, but that figure was widely unrealistic for a player who will have one year remaining on his deal at the Etihad this summer.

Everton committed about £12million to cover the bulk of Grealish’s wages during his loan and the finances involved over a long period of time mean there is no certainty he would remain at Hill Dickinson Stadium. Moyes said he was “disappointed” for Grealish but added it was too early to speak about whether he would play for the club again.
