Welcome to the 2025 Big 12 Uniform Season Review! What a roller coaster season in the Big 12. Ten teams finished at .500 or higher, eight teams went to bowls, one team was in the CFP, and we saw Year 1 for the head coaches of UCF & WVU. And of course, it was one hell of a uniform year! In this edition, we’ll check out each team’s suits, my favorite & least favorite looks (helpfully labeled by Helmet/Jersey/Pants color), and a brief summary of my thoughts. Plus, we’ll see if my Week 0 predictions for each team were correct. I’ll give out some accolades & recap some uniform highlights later in THE 2025 Big 12 Uniform Awards, which is always a good time. But for now, let’s go through every team & have some fun. Here we go!
I’m u/matte_purple, and let’s 3,2,1 go!
Texas Tech University Red Raiders (12-2):
Number of Combos: 13 Best: Black/Black/White Worst: Black/Red/White
In 2025, TTU climbed to great heights, winning the Big 12 ‘ship for the first time in program history, earning a CFP bye, and very narrowly missed out on sending a potential Heisman candidate to New York. Granted, the CFP didn’t go as planned, but this can certainly be considered one of the - if not the - best seasons in Red Raider history. And the fun isn’t over! Tech’s investments have paid off, momentum is going stronger, and Tech looks to get even better with more high caliber transfers & talents coming in for 2026. TTU fans should be pleased!
Onto the uniforms! Tech only had one true repeat, their Black/Red/Black look which I suspect many would choose as their favorite. There were two other repeating combos (W/W/W & Black/Black/White), but each of those were different templates (the Mahomes look & the throwback). Speaking of throwbacks, their Week 7 100th anniversary throwbacks were by far my favorite uniform in 2025. The TECH wordmark was present on their first uniforms, back when they were the “Matadors.” The helmet logo comes from 1926, the first Double T, while the helmet stars mimic those from 1965. The striped shoulder pattern with the integrated logo is sourced directly from the 1930 jersey design, and the number font comes from the 1935 suits. The leg stripe mimics the harness collar on the Masked Rider’s steed from 1965. It’s simply great! For the “worst,” I’ve got to go with Tech’s only tri-color uniform from Week 3. I’ve grown to appreciate some mismatched suits when worn in away games, but it simply doesn’t feel right at home. This suit is more similar to the combos used in the 1960’s, but I just can’t seem to get over how much better a symmetrical or two tone suit looks at home in the Jones. Regardless, Texas Tech had an AWESOME uniform year & year in general.
Did Week 0 prediction hold? No. I predicted a “change up with the updated pieces,” meaning more new & interesting combos. Instead we saw several repeated combos from last year (only three suits in 2025 were not seen in 2024) which makes perfect sense! I’m not mad about these classical choices at all.
BYU Cougars (12-2):
Number of Combos: 10 Best: White/Royal/White Worst: Royal/Royal/Royal
Another great season for BYU! Freshman QB Bachmeier was a revelation, leading the Cougars to the program’s 2nd consecutive 11-win season. With their only losses being to the other conference giant TTU, they’ve positioned themselves as a top program in the Big 12. With HC Kalani Sitake at the helm & several offensive standouts running it back for 2026, it seems like BYU is poised to continue to compete for the top spot. All that & a Pop-Tarts Bowl dub to boot!
Well, I know my “worst” pick is going to be a very controversial choice. I went with the all-royal choice worn in Week 8 in the Holy War. Don’t get me wrong, I think this was the perfect choice for the rivalry color v color matchup. But was it the “worst” uniform they wore this year? I think yes. It’s the only look where I feel like it’s a bit too much blue. Even in the other all-royal suit worn vs Texas Tech, we see a white facemask that breaks up the look. But honestly, the moniker of “worst” is HIGHLY exaggerated here. Picking the “worst” of them is like trying to decide who the worst athlete in the BYU Ring of Honor is. Regardless, BYU killed it this year. Don’t take the choice personally! The best choice speaks for itself: The Pop-Tarts Bowl suit. Not only are these revered by Cougar fans for their appearance in the 1984 natty season, they also straight up look great! The color, symmetry, consistent striping, plus some sprinkles on top (between the helmet stripe), and you’ve got an all time suit.
Did Week 0 prediction hold? Yes! This was by far the most obvious prediction I made. I simply said BYU would “run it back” after an already great uniform year in 2024. Although the surprise factor was muted, as BYU has released their uniform schedule ahead of time. Excellent year from BYU, who wore their greatest uniform combos this year and wore two special edition helmets.
University of Utah Utes (11-2):
Number of Combos: 9 Best: Red/Red/Red Worst: Black/White/White
Firmly 3rd place in the Big 12, Utah rebounded successfully after finding diamonds in UNM coach Jason Beck & QB Devon Dampier. The Utes seemed to achieve most of their wins easily, but losing to rival BYU & eventual Big 12 champ TTU did put them in a bowl, rather than playoff contention. They reestablished themselves as one of the major players in the conference, but now face a rocky offseason with longtime HC Kyle Whittingham’s dramatic hire as Michigan’s head coach. Can new HC Morgan Scalley continue the excellence Utah found this season?
My choice for the best Utah look of 2025 was tough, so I’ll start with the “worst” choice: Week 3’s Black & White standard suit. Black is my least favorite shell for the Circle & Feather logo helmets. Add that to an already less than ideal standard white uniform (not throwbacks) and you’ve got one of the rougher looks this year. Now, I do really enjoy the black shell when it’s paired with a black jersey, especially the Week 10 & Week 13 combos. I also considered the Ute Proud suit from Week 4, and most of the throwback uniforms - which I strongly feel should be adopted full time. But in the end, I think their all-red bowl uniform was best. Utah wore monochrome suits 7 times this season, which is the most in the past three seasons. That did limit my choices - and I already felt I could only choose one of the throwbacks. So I picked one that incorporated the Circle & Feather! The nice sections of white breaking up the red canvas & pairing of the excellent throwback/helmet makes the choice easy.
Did Week 0 prediction hold? Sigh. No. I predicted this would be the year the traditional uniforms got the axe in favor of the throwbacks. That obviously didn’t happen. Maybe in 2026?
University of Houston Cougars (10-3):
Number of Combos: 9 Best: Red/Red/White Worst: White/Red/Red
Well, that was unprecedented. I knew Houston was going to get better with Willie Fritz at the helm, but I didn’t expect such a short turnaround! This season marked the Coog’s first 10-win season since 2021. There were two disappointing losses to TCU & WVU, but a thrilling bowl win vs LSU and victories vs Arizona State, Baylor & Rice, I’d say most Houston fans should be extremely pleased by the season. What’s more, UH seems well equipped for next year, experiencing fairly minimal roster turnover & promoting QB coach Shawn Bell to assistant HC. A VERY good year for the Coogs!
A surprise update to Houston’s suits in the summer of 2025 fixed many problems I normally brought up. The new Nike F.U.S.E template added a contrasting collar (the first time Houston’s uniform collar has contrasted since 2012), added a new wordmark introduced in 2022, and fixed the discolored pant stripe. The update adds a little more substance & identity. Their Luv Ya Blue suit received an update, but their black uniforms worn in honor of the late Director of Strength and Performance Kurt Hester did not receive the same update. Maybe they’ll receive some attention next year, but I’m not torn up about it since it seems the black uniforms weren’t initially planned for ‘25. Normally, I would choose the Houston “Luv Ya” Blue suit as my favorite, but I felt their Week 1 suit deserves that honor this year. It has an elegant simplicity that I enjoy. No crazy details apart from the wordmark, and the new collar looks best here. Like a good steak, it just needs a little salt & pepper, then down the hatch. Their worst suit, reluctantly, was probably the White/Red/Red suit from [Week 8](imgur…
