I was aware of this show for years but whatever reason though I hadn’t given it a shot. I think in part it might be because i’m not much of a documentary film buff.
I didn’t go in entirely blind. I knew about a third of what they were parodying like Grey Gardens & Stop Making Sense.
I was so impressed with how much effort they put into malking each episode look like it’s own individual show. The production design, costume design, filming & editing are top-notch.
It’s also incredibly funny in many different ways. Juan Likes Rice & Chicken is bone dry comedy but something like DRONEZ: The Hunt for El Chingon is just so over the top ridiculous.
There is a slight dip in qualtity when Bill Hader leaves the show. I think there’s a lot to love though in those last two seasons.
I know there are a few online favorites that I’ve found out about. I want to highlight How They Threw Rocks from season 4. This riff on When We Were Kings with rock fights is outstanding. Trystan Gravelle is so charismatic & electrifying as the former champ returned.
The online availability for the show is a bit garbage. Netflix seems to be the only place that has every single episode. If you end up truly loving the show, I recommend picking up the Blu-ray. It’s great set all around from packaging, image quality & extras.
