The Beauty - Episodes 1-3 Review I used to be a huge American Horror Story fan but then, overtime, distanced myself from the franchise after a few too many seasons in a row I didn’t enjoy. Ryan Murphy has had a heap of hits and misses, and with “All’s Fair” and some other more recent shows, he was needing a big hit in my opinion. I can’t say that “The Beauty” is that colossal success his reputation perhaps needs but it’s certainly a step in the right direction!
Ryan Murphy’s works always combine sex and horror in some fun and interesting ways, and “The Beauty” does this well too! The body horror elements are quite disturbing at times; in fact, a lot of the show was quite “icky” with various imagery, music and design choices. Some of Murphy’s swings are misses when dialogue and character choices are almost laughable and cringe, but then there’s also some genuine fun and thrills to be had! There are several times in the first three episodes where you’re thinking “WTF?!”, which is a fun sensation to have with such quirky material.
Big shout out to Anthony Ramos who I really enjoyed. And the character of Jeremy has me more invested than I thought possible. At one moment you kind of sympathise with him, and then other moments that sympathy is shot dead (literally).
I like that the first three episodes came out all at once as they are a good binge (weird Ep 2 is only 25 minutes), but now with a week between now and next ep, I’m not really sure I’m invested enough to come back straight away. Might wait to binge the rest? The Beauty - Episodes 1-3 Review
