An autopsy from the county medical examiner said the detainee, Geraldo Lunas Campos, was asphyxiated and restrained by law enforcement. Federal officials described his death as a suicide.
Geraldo Lunas Campos wanted to go to punitive housing in order to have access to asthma medication needed to stay alive, so guards choked him to death. Medicine is not routinely available because the US stopped paying for detainee medical care.
