Hello r/CFB! Welcome to the 2023 Big XII Uniform Tracker in Week 7! Let me tell you, my jaw dropped several times this weekend. Each and every game was either stupidly overmatched or a roller coaster that nearly stopped hearts. Let’s have a look at the uniforms and laugh about some of these games. In case you are unfamiliar with how my tracker works, I catalog every Big 12 team’s uniform combination week-to-week, and also look at the opposition’s suits. I also compile our future institutions in Arizona, Colorado, Arizona State, and Utah. I provide a few of my thoughts on the game, the uniforms, and a brief history of the series and/or fun facts. Let’s get to it!
I’m u/matte_purple and let’s 3, 2, 1, go!
West Virginia University Mountaineers at University of Houston Cougars (UH Wins, 41-39)
Houston: White/Black/Black (Link: )
WVU: Blue/White/White (Link: )
How do you even begin to describe what happened here? TEN lead changes? A Hail Mary TIP DRILL for the WIN? All in the very first historic matchup of these football teams. My goodness gracious this was a game for the ages. WVU QB Garrett Greene threw for 391 yds and two TDs, tacking on 47 yds rushing with two TDs for West Virginia, while former TTU QB Donovan Smith led the Cougars well, scoring on four of six second-half drives, and Smith did not have an incompletion in the second half. But despite owning the time of possession, first downs, and total yardage, WVU faltered in penalties, especially a crucial unsportsmanlike penalty after a Mountaineer TD that put Houston near midfield. If you haven’t, go find the highlights for this game and enjoy. First I thought this would be the craziest game of the week, and then CU happened, and THEN Colorado State happened. Regardless, this will be an instant classic.
Houston wore these same uniforms against Tulane last year, and I have a lot of the same thoughts here. The script Cougars on the jersey front outlined in red is excellent, the Nike and conference logo are a little smaller to avoid clutter. Black facemask, solid colors, nice block numbers. There is a perfect blend of red, white, and black. I only have one gripe, and that is the odd gray/white stripe on the pants. Solid black fixes that problem quickly. Normally I complain about wearing black simply because it’s cool, but it kind of works for UH. They tend to go with pretty plain uniforms, so the dash of spice is nice.
WVU rocked a mostly white uniform capped off by their blue “Cue Country Roads” helmet introduced in this year’s Backyard Brawl. And yes, this look is clean. The font differentiates the white nicely, the helmet is busy enough to compensate for some of the stark white, and the suit is of course helped by a night game against a team wearing black. I won’t blab anymore, they’re nice. On an interesting note, WVU has yet to wear a blue jersey this season, which is far from normal. What are the chances?
University of Cincinnati Bearcats vs Iowa State University Cyclones (ISU Wins, 30-10)
UC: Black/Red/Black (Link: )
ISU: Red/White/White (Link: )
The Cyclones smashed their way through Cincinnati in what turned out to be a pretty one-sided game. Here’s a fun stat for you: ISU entered the day with 10 interceptions, third-most in the FBS. It took the Iowa State defense just two drives to pick off Bearcat QB Emory Jones. And whatever they’ve been putting in the corn up in Ames has clearly been working. Iowa State has one of the most efficient spread offenses in the conference, something no one imagined for this season. The Cyclones have quickly become a conference contender thanks largely to star freshman QB Rocco Becht who ran for one score and threw for an additional two. ISU faces Baylor after a bye week, while Cincinnati faces the Bears this weekend.
While the overall uniform matchup in this game was just meh, I liked each team’s individual look. For Iowa State, this is the first time we’ve seen the red lids with all-white this season. We only saw it once last season, against Oklahoma State. I think I prefer the white/white/red away look, but having one piece of the uniform being cardinal tends to balance out the rest of the uniform. I’m not huge on the font design or the shoulder accents, but they provide a uniqueness that the logo or other aspects don’t quite get right. I’ve been hard on these details in the past, but they are slowly beginning to grow on me.
Cincinnati really cannot go wrong. This slimmed down, streamlined uniform design does wonders for the Bearcat’s versatility. This color combo was worn in Week 4 of last year, but the emphasized collar, shoulder cuffs, and de-cluttered faceplate really makes this work. I especially loved Emory Jones, the QB, wearing red sleeves to keep the aggressive tone up. The black keeps the striking red in check, making a symmetrical and balanced uniform. Cincinnati continues to show that you can’t go wrong when you don’t wear tri-colored jerseys.
Oklahoma State University Cowboys vs University of Kansas Jayhawks (OSU Wins, 39-32)
KU: White/White/Red (Link: )
OSU: Orange/Orange/White (Link: )
The Cowboys started off hot with a 5-play drive thanks to a pretty chunk play from RB Ollie Gordon. They added another 7 after a quick back and forth. And OSU kept moving at a brisk pace all game. KU also caught on to the old school Big 12 shootout mentality: QB Jason Bean passed for career highs of 410 yds and 5 TDs. Both teams hit the 500 yd mark on total yds, really embracing the offensive side of the ball. Both teams played very well, but Jason Bean throwing 2 INTs, OSU forcing a fumble, and Cowboy RB Ollie Gordon II having a miracle day (gained a whopping 284 yds from scrimmage and scored two TDs) pushed the Cowboys to a victory. Oklahoma State has had a wild season already, losing to South Alabama, struggling against Central Arkansas and Arizona State, and then clapping back against reigning Big 12 champs K-State and trampling KU, I’m just at a loss for words. And don’t forget, KU is one win away from being bowl eligible for two consecutive years, which is the first time that has happened in Jayhawk history. Despite the tough loss, both teams are on the up-and-up.
This would have been the uniform game of the week if KU had worn blue pants and a blue facemask. Plain and simple. The red pants did not look good with the orange. Despite this, I really liked both looks. Plus, it seems like KU has some swagger in this suit. They wore it twice last year, and I ranked it fifth out of 11 combos worn last year. It looks better this year thanks to the updated suits, especially the block numbers and classic striping. Very similar to the Bearcat’s look this week, the red was balanced out nicely.
The Cowboys wore a very orange look, and I loved it! Funny enough, this was one of the combos that wasn’t worn last year, which is wild to me. It makes so much sense! All-orange is a lot, and the white keeps the color in check. The helmets also look good with the classic brand in white with black outline. It’s similar to a helmet worn in a 2020 and 2021 game, but the black outline provides a much needed structure to the logo on the orange shell. OK-State grabbed my Big XII Uniform Team of the Year last year in 2022, and their remarkable variety while also keeping brand consistency is really remarkable. Someone else better step up fast, or the Cowboys may grab that award again. Excellent looks for both teams, just didn’t work when pitted together.
Brigham Young University Cougars vs Texas Christian University Horned Frogs (TCU Wins, 44-11)
BYU: White/White/Royal (Link: )
TCU: Purple/Black/Purple (Link: )
Similar to the last game we covered, TCU got off to a quick start, snagged a walk-in pick six on BYU’s first drive of the game and proceeded to toss a 42-yd TD after getting the ball back quickly. Unlike the KU game above, the Horned Frogs stomped on the pedal and never let up. A lot of the damage done was thanks to ANOTHER second string QB coming in and messing things up a la Max Duggan. While we are all hoping for a Chandler Morris recovery, the new starter QB Josh Hoover, a redshirt freshman, did incredible, completing 37-58 passes for 439 yds and 4 TDs, all to different receivers. And the run game ate, too. At about 5 yds per rush, the Horned Frogs easily doubled BYU’s total yards, 584 to 243. TCU grabs a much needed win before heading to Manhattan, Kansas to face the Wildcats in a Big 12 Championship rematch.
This was the uniform matchup of the week.I LOVE when TCU embraces the darker hues of their uniform. This classic combo of purple sandwiching black is almost a favorite of mine. As many of you know, I like the black helmet option better, but you’ve gotta rep the purple for homecoming. I do wish that the helmet without the TCU on it made an appearance, like what we saw in Week 3 and Week 4, especially considering the EQ staff already put out a purple variety.
DAMN this BYU uniform looks great. The royal is such a distinctive color, and it anchors the rest of the all-white suit masterfully. This is easily one of my favorite away looks that the Cougars roll out. The striping is…
