Season 2 of The Boys may have been the one with the most trenchant social critique, and one moment from it still sticks with me. After an Indian store clerk is killed by a Stormfront supporter, Stormfront says during a rally that she has raised money to donate to the store clerk’s family.
The reason this is dead-on satire is because this is the type of line-straddling PR done by fascists with a grander ethnonationalist agenda, that even weak idiot liberals fall for, and point to when telling other liberals to not rush to throwing the word “Nazi” around. It mirrors when Andrew Tate donated some money to women’s domestic violence funds when he first began catching flack, or when Trump briefly had Kim Kardashian in the White House to pay lip service to criminal justice reform.
If Stormfront were a real person, you’d have dozens of centrist liberals like Conor Friedersdorf and Thomas Chatterton Williams calling anyone labeling Stormfront a Nazi “hysterical,” and pointing to her fundraiser for the victim of her rhetoric as proof of why she’s a sensible moderate. They’d be incapable of conceiving of evil people as conscious, calculated and strategic people, and smugly congratulate themselves on their own measured tone in the face of fascist escalation.
