I know Fallout and Halo are two totally different video games, but I think this parallel is still valid. I grew up playing the Halo games, ever since Combat Evolved. I was always a huge fan of the franchise. So when the Halo TV series was announced, I had high expectations, only to be utterly disappointed by (1) how it barely resembled the games at all and (2) what a mediocre overall series it was.

But with Fallout, I’ve had the exact opposite experience. I’ve never played any Fallout game before, and know nothing about the lore or franchise. But the new TV series is damn great, and season 2 has been a blast so far. I feel very attached to these characters even though I’m not familiar with anyone from the games. I can’t wait to see what’s in store in future seasons.

And apparently I’m not alone. The overall reception I’ve seen to the Fallout show has been very positive, unlike that of the Halo show. As a TV series adaptation of a popular sci-fi game, it seems Fallout is unexpectedly the show people hoped Halo would be. Does anyone not think so? Perhaps I like the show because I’ve never played the games, so I have no idea how faithful it is. I’ve heard mixed things in that regard. The only people I know who like the Halo show haven’t played the games so maybe that explains it.
