I’ve noticed that some TV characters are written out for several episodes (or even a whole season) because the actor is filming a movie or another show. From a legal standpoint, how is this allowed? I always assumed that being a series regular meant you had an exclusivity contract that prevented you from taking other jobs until the current production was finished. Do showrunners just play nice and let them go/renegotiate their contract, or are there specific loopholes in these contracts that allow for this?
