Heyoooo, back at it again for another year end aggregate. Every year I combine as many “best tv shows of the year” lists that I can find into one comprehensive list, in an attempt to find the critical consensus. We are up from 111 lists that I used last year, but still down from the 151 combined lists of the 2023 year

Anyways, it’s been about a week since any critics posted new year end lists, so I figured this was a good time to it quits for this year

I used the same point system that Metacritic has used in previous years for this

  • 3 points for each 1st place ranking
  • 2 points for each 2nd place ranking
  • 1 point for being ranked 3rd - 10th, or for being included on an unranked list
  • 0.5 points for being included on an unranked list of 11-20 titles (rather than 10), or for each item on split comedy/drama lists of 10 titles apiece (regardless of ranking on those lists)
Rank Show # First Place # Second Place Other Mentions Total Points # of Lists
1 The Pitt (HBO) 17 5 58 113.5 80

  • This was definitely the closest race for the top spot that I’ve ever seen (over my, now, three years doing this. During the process The Pitt, Andor, and Adolesence all had the #1 spot at some point. The previous years I’ve done had a very clear Number one choice that was untouchable in the ratings (Shogun and Succession)
  • The highest rated show without a first place finish is The Chair Company
  • The highest rated show without a first or a second place finish is Alien: Earth
  • The highest rated animated show is Long Story Short
  • The channels with the most shows are HBO (9), Netflix (5), AppleTV+ (3), FX (3), and Disney+, Hulu, Adult Swim, Crave, BBC One all have one
  • Rolling Stone has the most overlap with this list, with 13 shows
  • Rolling Stone is also the only list to have all of the top 10 mentioned
  • I’m debating changing the scoring system for when I do this next year, so be more like that of the Album of the Year year end wrap up. For the last three years I’ve been using the exact MetaCritic scoring system, first place gets 3 points, second place gets two, and everything from 3-10 all get 1 point. AOTY will score more than just the top 10 points, and gives more points out for more entries. Essentially, if an entry was ranked #1 on a list of 25 shows, it gets 25 points, 2nd gets 24 points, 3rd gets 23 points, so on and so forth. This is the method I use for all my other aggregate lists (wait, you do other aggregate lists? - Yes, I’ll talk about that in a sec) because I think it gives a clearer picture
  • BUT I don’t want to change things up if the people (that’s all of you) specifically like the MC style rankings. So I will post TWO comments down below, one for each method, please just take the time to upvote whichever one you like best. It won’t take long but it’ll make the list for next year easier for me
  • I don’t just do year end wrap ups for TV, but I do them for a bunch of different genres and mediums. I have done this for rap albums, scifi films, Twilight Zone episodes, fighting games, pornos, Nobuo Uematsu songs, I even have a bunch of WORST of all time aggregate lists. Unfortunately the sub won’t allow me to post the link because blogs arent allowed, but if anyone’s really interested in other work like this, the lists can be found at canonkeeper . blogspot . com, you’ll just have to get there yourself (I also host an archive of all of the old Metacritic rankings since they’ve been taken down from the official website)
  • Clearly I love doing these spreadsheets/lists, and will continue to do them, BUT if anyone has any ins at MetaCritic and wants to talk to them about hiring me hosting these types of lists again please send them my way. Honestly, I’m not even picky, if anyone knows any site that would like to host these year end lists to give them a little bit more a sense legitimacy than just a reddit post, send them my way lol
  • If you want to see all my work with the every show that even got one mention, the spreadsheet can be found here
