Granted I am new to the 9-1-1 series on ABC and found out about it due to that viral promo for Season 9 where the 118 crew look on as the meteors were heading for Earth,

Why was that storyline hated so much?

The space sequences required a lot of coordination and practical sets were built for it, it is much more ambitious and challenging to write than the standard rescues. It provided a very tense and high stakes situation which helped the characters form stronger bonds. And it gave the show a lot of attention. This show is basically a reverse Final Destination anyways, so it didn’t see too out-of-left-field since there was a literal tornado of bees in the previous season.
