The Tank Job of the Week is an award for the FBS team that did the best job of humiliating itself over the weekend. Whether they blew a large lead, choked away a spot in the limelight, lost a game they had absolutely no right losing, or completely screwed everything on a last second blunder, the TJOTW winner sets the gold standard in college football misery.
PREVIOUS WINNERS
- Baylor Bears (lost to Texas State 42-31)
- Nevada Wolf Pack (lost to Idaho 33-6)
- Oklahoma State Cowboys (lost to South Alabama 33-7)
- Minnesota Golden Gophers (lost to Northwestern 37-34)
- UCF Knights (lost to Baylor 36-35)
- Miami-FL Hurricanes (lost to Georgia Tech 23-20
LAST WEEK: It still feels kinda weird because at the start of every year I just figure that the Red River Shootout winner is going to take the Week 6 vote and that game didn’t even merit a nomination. Anyways, it wasn’t unanimous because some people had to be THAT GUY and vote for Notre Dame or UCF or… Kentucky? Anyways, it was Miami, full stop. Is it the greatest TJOTW of all time? It’s got an argument. Will it never ever be topped? Maybe not, but that doesn’t mean we’re going to stop trying!
Onto this week and once again just a reminder that some of you wanted me to just give UCF the Ultimate after Week 5, and that’s never going to stop being funny. Anyways, there is a glorious, bountiful feast laid before us, and let’s get to it.
NOTE: For Ease of Counting, please use carats in your vote, like this: . Thank you, and thanks for participating!
HONORABLE MENTIONS
- South Carolina’s donut dogs.
- In fact… just South Carolina in general.
- Georgia’s defense giving up 20 to Vandy.
- Navy vs Charlotte.
- Memphis’ nut punch.
- Ohio’s lemon against NIU.
- BYU, NC State & South Florida all got shelled in games that should have been much closer.
- ULM couldn’t hold a late 20-9 lead over Texas State.
And now, the nominees for Week 7 are…
BOISE STATE BRONCOS (lost to Colorado State 31-30)
While blown leads were the theme of the week, Boise State went into turbo-mode, with a spectacular 21-point meltdown that evoked memories of a legendary game from 43 years ago- the 1980 Holiday Bowl. And while it’s not quite as egregious- BYU only needed 2:33 to make the comeback on SMU before winning on a Hail Mary, at 4:16 its still an impressive meltdown for a team that was up 30-10 and had the game in the bag. And that raises a question- the Broncos are 3-4 and still play Wyoming, Fresno State, and Air Force. Is this the year Boise finally misses a bowl?
COLORADO BUFFALOES (lost to Stanford 46-43)
It was 29-0 at the half, after 11:00 on the East Coast, and most of CFB nation went to bed, if they even had bothered with this one in the first place. And then Stanford, who’d already lost to Sacramento State and had only beaten Hawaii, magically turned into mid-2010’s Stanford and roared back with a 36-7 second half to force overtime. Colorado then decides to play offense, completely negating the advantage of going second, which backfires HARD when Stanford picks off a Shadeur Sanders heroball and sets up the field goal to end this shocker.
LOUISVILLE CARDINALS (lost to Pittsburgh 38-21)
It was Lousville’s time. They’d just pummeled Notre Dame, had a favorable schedule to Charlotte, and perhaps destiny on their side. And they even led 21-14 at the half! So of course 1-4 Pitt then rattles off 24 consecutive points, and whatever the popular saying is, it’s the Cards who are eating it now. I guess the Blue Vase of Feelings worked.
MARYLAND TERRAPINS (lost to Illinois 27-24)
Yup… its October.
MIAMI-FL HURRICANES (lost to North Carolina 41-31)
One of the big questions entering the week is how Miami would respond to the previously mentioned all-timer against Georgia Tech. The answer- pretty well! …For a half. Then the Tar Heels went on a 24-0 run as the Miami offense sputtered with two turnovers and a negative-yardage three-and-out. The Canes did claw back with a couple of late TD’s but by then the damage had been done.
MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS (lost to Rutgers 27-24)
At the start of the fourth quarter, Michigan State had a 24-6 lead and the ball. By the eight minute mark, its was 27-24, thanks to a scoop and score, a 12-play 73 yard TD drive in under 4 minutes, and a botched kickoff that immediately led to another Scarlet Knight touchdown nine seconds later. The rain was pouring down in Piscataway, and it washed any hopes of Sparty turning its season around down the drain.
USC TROJANS (lost to Notre Dame 48-20)
Hey, credit the much maligned Trojan defense, who held the Irish to just 251 yards! Of course, that STILL couldn’t stop Notre Dame from hanging nearly half a hundred on them, aided and abetted by an uncharacteristic offensive meltdown that included three Caleb Williams picks and a scoop and score. Oh, and a 99 yard kickoff return to blow the game back open just as it looked like USC was getting it together to make a run.
WASHINGTON STATE COUGARS (lost to Arizona 44-6)
WHY IS THE DESERT VOODOO COMING NORTH NOW?!
WEST VIRGINIA MOUNTAINEERS (lost to Houston 41-39)
Imagine where a 5-1 WVU with only a loss to Penn State would sit in the rankings right now. Unfortunately, imagining is all you can do because the miracle 50 yard 4th and 9 touchdown to give the ‘Eers the lead with just 12 seconds left was promptly nullified by a Houston hail mary. It could (and probably will) be argued that the chaos that happened after this Thursday game was more egregious, but it started with this. You let the Purgers into the house, WVU, and now there’s blood EVERYWHERE.
