I truly believe this game on Saturday will be the ultimate Sickos Bowl this season. This game will have it all:
Two in-state schools playing each other for the first time that could be the start of a burgeoning rivalry? Check.
Mike Houston being disliked at Charlotte because he ran out on them to join ECU, only for his ECU tenure to not go as planned? Check.
Biff Poggi making bold claims in preseason that do not appear to be backed up? Check.
Game is on a streaming service only at a weird kick-off time (ESPN+ at 2pm)? Check.
Two terrible offenses who cannot seem to score or move the ball? Check. *Neither team has a win against an FBS team this year. Charlotte’s last FBS win came 336 days ago, while ECU’s last FBS win came 298 days ago.
*ECU has the 7th worst offense in the country and Charlotte has the 9th worst offense in terms of yards per game.
*Both offenses are in the bottom 15 of the country in average points per game.
*None of the ECU wide receivers have scored a TD through six games into the season.
*Charlotte was just shutout in a game for the first time since 2017 while ECU somehow has scored in every game they’ve played since 1997.
Both teams enter this game desperate for a win, with the loser on the cusp of missing bowl eligibility entirely. If Charlotte win, it would be a huge momentum builder for Poggi and the program, while sending the ECU fanbase into full meltdown with Mike Houston’s hot seat only getting hotter. If ECU win, they have a chance to try and salvage what remains of the season. Whatever happens, the game on Saturday will be one for the Sickos of the sport to watch. And despite how badly ECU has played this year, I still wouldn’t miss watching this game.
