No, none of that is new in the slightest. He’s wrong that we don’t know religious extremism here in the west. While a lot of us don’t need to consider it, a hefty percentage is still very religious, and they are most certainly heavily involved in our politics. Particularly in school boards.
He’s right it’s about values, though. And the most important value is freedom. Freedom is required to be good, you have to be free to see and choose from available alternatives, to not be locked into a system where you’re forced to do things just to survive. Now, if we here in the west choose to value freedom, then we should try to apply it consistently, even when it is difficult to do so. This way our moral high ground can be more than something we just pretend.
If Israel surrenders its values of freedom in exchange for predictable security, for how long will they continue to be more enlightened than the more militant HAMAS? Are Jews uniquely immune to religious extremism or something? Or have they simply never had good cause and opportunity?
We fight this same battle here in the States. We’re trying to still deserve our freedom, to not treat Middle Easterners like we deserve power over them, even though they also suddenly shocked and enraged us, about 20 years ago now. We’re starting to want a solution that actually works, instead of just repeating history.
