I can’t believe this show is five years old now. I fell in love with it the first year it came out and have watched it every year (sometimes multiple times per Christmas) since. I am a book lover, I was the weird kid who didn’t fit in, and I am still often the kind of cynic who would call out the impossible New York geography in Home Alone 2 (except at Christmas, when I turn into Lily).
Yes, it’s schmaltzy, unrealistic, nobody looks 17, the acting isn’t award winning - but it’s so unbelievably full of heart. The Dyker Heights scene and the final scenes of the show still give me butterflies every time I see them. Dyker Heights in particular captures what I love about Christmas - we make our own magic and we can choose to look past the consumerism and lights to the people beneath it all.
Great soundtrack too, nearly every episode has a great tune, many of which I wasn’t familiar with prior to the show (eg Home Alone, Too, and the amazing Gracie Abrams song in the final episode).
I’m too old for him but I do have a soft spot for Austin Abrams and his amazing hair too 😂 Dash is 100% the boy I would have crushed on as a teen.
Anyone else still love this massively overlooked and underappreciated Christmas romance gem? I just finished my first rewatch of the season and want to talk about it. What’s your favourite part about it? Let’s share the love a bit!
