Ohio University has terminated head football coach Brian Smith “for cause” after an internal administrative review found he violated his employment contract by engaging in “serious professional misconduct” and participating in activities that reflected unfavorably on the university.

Smith was placed on administrative leave on Dec. 1 for undisclosed reasons as the university began investigating.

A public records letter from OU President Lori Stewart Gonzalez cites multiple alleged breaches of conduct including an extramarital relationship with an undergraduate student (important to note that this file claims there were “affairs” plural, alluding to multiple alleged relationships outside of his marriage) and violations of the university’s alcohol policy. The document states he admitted to the affair to AD Slade Larscheid and was observed by student athlete families, donors, and alumni while carrying out the affair.

The letter claims Smith kept alcohol in his office, drank it during work hours, and was observed smelling of alcohol at a public event

Through his attorney, Smith denies the affair allegation as presented, saying he was separated from his wife at the time, didn’t know the other person was a student when they met, and ended the relationship once he learned she was enrolled. Ohio University also has no policy preventing employees dating students (unless one party “maintains a supervisory or evaluative roll over the other party”)

The lawyer also argues the alcohol issues did not impair his job performance and challenges the university’s treatment of due process.
