Footballer Quincy Promes (33) has asked the Amsterdam Court of Appeal to lift his pre-trial detention so that he can care for his five children. Promes has now been in pre-trial detention for six months and wants to await the substantive hearing of his criminal case on appeal while remaining free.
“It’s not even about my football career anymore. It’s purely financial, to help the children,” Promes said in court on Thursday. ‘If I get the chance to be released, I will abide by the conditions.’ His solicitor described his client’s financial situation as dire. Promes cannot train in prison. ‘I’m not fit at the moment. When I’m released, the first thing I’ll do is work hard to get back in shape.’
Promes owns several properties, but according to his solicitor, he does not receive income from all of them. His mother lives in one of the houses. His ex-wife lives in another property with the children. The tenant of a third property is not paying the rent, the solicitor explained. ‘And then he has to take care of five minor children. The need is now quite urgent,’ said lawyer Cem Polat.
Promes is suspected of cocaine smuggling and stabbing his cousin. The court in Amsterdam previously sentenced Promes in absentia to six years in prison for involvement in cocaine smuggling and to eighteen months for stabbing his cousin. Both cases have been combined in the appeal.
The Public Prosecution Service opposes the suspension or lifting of the provisional detention. ‘It is highly unusual,’ said the Advocate General. He emphasised that Promes only talks about his own interests and remains silent when asked about the allegations.
The court indicated that the case will not be heard until September of next year at the earliest.
