Over the past five years it has become increasingly difficult for G5 programs to schedule home games against P4 programs no matter what sort of offer they make. A large portion of P4 teams have made the strategic decision not to schedule future away games at G5 programs and conferences have even put out statements discouraging their members from doing so.

Almost all P4 at G5 games we have seen the past few years were scheduled years ago without plans to renew the series. What future P4 at G5 games there is scheduled are being canceled left and right, recently Virginia Tech canceled its away games at Old Dominion.

I can think of for example my school ECU, for decades an ECU fan could expect to have one if not two home games against a regional P4 program. Those games were almost always competitive and major wins over P4 teams serve as some of the greatest memories for ECU fans. However, looking at our schedule over the next 5 years we only have one future home game against a P4 school scheduled after Wake Forest recently canceled an away game against ECU.

This trend overall hurts the G5, in terms of ticket sales, building new fans, and building up their a strength of schedule. It also destroys traditions and rivalries, when G5 and P4 programs which for decades played home and homes now no longer do.

Fans of P4 programs will often say “there is nothing for us to gain by going to a G5 program.” But is there anything that can be done to make P4 teams want to play at G5 teams?
