Like a lot of you, I’ve been rewatching Mad Men on HBO and had forgotten some of the really edgy stuff they’d put in the first season to shock viewers with the 50s/60s-era misogyny and racism and parental abuse. But the worst part? Definitely Glen Bishop. If Milhouse were a person, this would be it.
People in older threads hand-waved it away with “this is hollywood, of course there’s gonna be nepo-babies on your favorite show!” but this is such a forced self-insert that it makes you cringe to your soul to watch. I know he was coming off the success of the Sopranos, but I wish someone had had the guts to sit him down and say “Matt, nobody wants to see your baby Weiner on this show, least of all next to January Jones.” Give her any other love interest, give him any other role, yet somehow they managed to find the perfect intersection of cringe and unsavory with this character.
Now I’m just trying to remember how many more episodes of this I’m going to be forced to endure before he disappears for a while.
