NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent informed teams today that the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFL Referees Association ends in May, making this is the final season of the agreement. The league now views this as an opportunity to take significant steps to improve officiating, pending union agreement.
NFL is looking for more access to officials year round for training and development. Right now, the NFL cannot speak to the officials from the day after the Super Bowl until May 15. So accessibility, flexibility, accountability are the league’s priorities and it has explained that to the union.
