Original Title: Since he joined the league in 2020, Jalen Hurts is 17th in ANY/A, 20th in passer rating, and 15th in EPA/play (includes rushing). He’s had a top 7 OL every year (best in two of them) via PFF pass block grade, AJB/Devonta/Goedert for all years except AJB in one, and a 1k rusher in all year but 1.
It is common (and correct) to take dominant QBs and adjust them for their supporting cast to separate them from the true elite QBs in the league. For example Purdy (1st in all 3 stats), Goff (5th, 5th, and 16th), Love (2nd, 11th, and 4th), Stafford (9th, 10th, 14th) have had their great to elite output put into context with the supporting casts they’ve had during their playing time. Therefore, they accurately sit soundly in the 5-10 range of QBs, if not just outside, despite the numbers they put up.
Hurts is often added to this group due to the success of the team around him (and other factors like his rushing TD numbers especially with the TD push, and his fantasy dominance), and is said to be given the “same treatment” of being placed in this 5-10 tier as opposed to higher because people acknowledge his stacked supporting cast.
But in reality, his performance and contribution to the team hasn’t even been close to that 5-10 tier of passing offenses/overall offenses. And that is without accounting for the amazing situation he is playing in. He has routine issues with accuracy and passing under pressure that the top QBs handle much better. His weapons routinely underperform compared to their talent.
In light of another miserable performance last night, Hurts’ standing among other QBs really needs to be evaluated. He does not belong in the tier with Stafford/Purdy/Goff/Love or Dak/Herbert (who performs at/above Hurts’ level with less help), or maybe (TBD) young/newly good guys if they continue this performance like Maye/Darnold/Mayfield/Jayden (hard to rank him). He fits much more reasonably in a tier with TLaw/Tua/Stroud/Kyler, average QBs, maybe a little below, but above the Dalton line, and would take a while before the team decided to move on from them. If you put great teams around them, they can have great stretches and play good overall. But they’re not the caliber of QB you’d want to build your entire team around, and if you have the chance to “Jordan Love” or “Jalen Hurts” your existing QB if a player falls to you, you should.
